THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK:The Year is half gone. For a few more weeks we shall keep the sweet illusion of high summer, but gradually now the songs of the birds will fade into muted twitterings. There will be a feeling of heaviness in the thick woods, the deep drowsiness that follows upon fulfillment. There is still much to anticipate: the pageantry of the mid-summer garden and the harvesting of corn and fruit, but he who is in tune with the moods of the earth will experience a sense of impending change. The blaze of noon has passed, and imperceptibly we have turned our faces towards the sunset of the year.

DURROW PARISH NEWSLETTER HISTORY: In the beginning the Newsletter was typed on Stencils which were then printed on an old Gestetner Machine in St. Fintan’s College, Durrow (now Castle Durrow House). When the Nuns left St. Fintan’s they donated the Gestetner to the Scouts which we continued to use until we could no longer purchase Stencils in 1998. We then typed the newsletter on an electric typewriter and printed the pages in the FAS Office in the Old Boy’s School on a photocopier until we progressed to using the computer. Now when the newsletter is typed it is given to Daniel Dunne who sets out the type as it is today and it is then printed on a Risograph Printer which we purchased in 2004 with the help of a donation from a supporter of Scouts. We have come a long way from our humble beginnings and if we can improve the newsletter in any way in the years to come we will do so. Fr. Jackie Robinson gave us his ‘Outlook’ piece from 1988 until he left Durrow in July 1991 which was a great help to us in the beginning. Johnny Conroy and the late Dr. Bannon also contributed with their Historical Snippets which we were always delighted to receive. If any resident of Durrow has any piece of historical information on our town we would be glad to receive it. The cost of the newsletter in the beginning was 20p and this was increased to 30p in March 1994. The only increase after that was when we changed to the Euro and it was increased to 50c. All through the years we have had dedicated sellers of the Newsletter which included the older Scouts and the parents of all sections Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. As the money raised from the sale of the newsletter go to help subsidies all the trips the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts make throughout the year we would again appeal to Older Scouts and Parents of all sections to once again get involved in selling the newsletter. Older Scouts please give your names in to Mary Walsh (057) 8726327. If two of you can come together either on a Saturday night or Sunday morning only one adult would be needed. Parents please encourage your child to held with this fundraising event.
